Vampires: Sucking the Fun Out of Everything

Hey guys! I know I was supposed to read this last week, but, I'm posting it now and that's all that matters.

So, onto the post!

Okay, so we went over vampires a little bit two weeks ago, right? Let's elaborate on my thoughts from them.

Yes, vampires are often seen as a fear of sexualization and mortality in the eyes of scholars throughout academia. Yes, these are main points that I myself make. But there is more to it.

A lot of the time in vampire novels, the vampires themselves are no fun. They are so broody and overly romantic and morose that nobody around them wants to have any fun. Is it really a shocker that the Cullen's didn't actually have any friends other than themselves? Not really. With Lord Brood over there, nobody could have a proper conversation to become their friends.

This also happens in the Anne Rice novels. They are NO fun. They want to drink alcohol, drink blood, have sex, and repeat. Well, Louis also broods on top of it, but you get my point. Even Lestat with his "parties" is not what one would call fun in the slightest.

Also, these are creatures that live to be hundreds of years old. They will get bored, and in turn, boring to be around. "Oh yeah, another war, back in MY day, we used to have REAL wars about IMPORTANT things, not like this trivial stuff." (My inner monologue of a douche vampire)

So, yes, vampires are sex-gods (apparently). But why? Is it because they are seen as beautiful. By what standards. They are always shown as being super pale with dark hair and blood red lips. (...that sounds familiar, yeah? Like a certain Disney princess?) But this is a European standard! Being as white as possible is not necessarily the world's standard of beauty. So if their sexualization is dependent on beauty, that idea does not include the whole world.

Another aspect of this sexualization is how they get their sustenance. They have to bite someone, mostly in the neck or another large artery. Often something that happens during a sexual encounter, yes? Because of that, they are (now) romanticized to be pleasuring their victims while also draining them of life.

Okay, now onto the fear of mortality. I go back to this one again and again thinking about the drawbacks of being immortal.

1) All Your Friends are Dead

2) You have to live through stupid trends you thought were done

3) The constant changing of language means what you thought was "in" five centuries ago is now complete gibberish

4) Grudges

5) You WILL end up thinking of the perfect comeback to an argument to someone who died a century ago and you will never be able to tell them

6) Who knows what wars you will have to live through

7) The foods you loved will no longer be available (see Captain America in Winter Soldier)

8) If people know you're immortal, they will never stop asking you to make them immortal too

9) You'll have to move constantly or be a hermit. No inbetween

10) Dude, drinking blood probably sucks, especially in the 21st century

So there you have it. Why being a vampire would suck. (No pun intended)

(Just kidding. My puns are always intended)

As always, you can find me on social media at dsbookie.

I'll catch you guys next time!

XOXO

Dana
